Food Revolution Day, Gifts Included

As a Kitchenette, I am thrilled to be part of Food Revolution Day 2014 here in Maple Ridge May 16 and 17th.  I live in South Surrey/White Rock, so you might ask me why I’d drive all the way to Maple Ridge early on a Saturday morning to volunteer for this event?  Well, for one, the Kitchenettes are my peeps and what is important to them becomes important to me, but that is not where my story ends.

Jamie Oliver says, “We need every child to understand where food comes from, how to cook it and how it affects their body. This is about setting kids up with the knowledge they need to make better food choices for life.” (www.foodrevolutionday.com)

I’d suggest that not only do our children need to understand where food comes from and gather the knowledge that will enable them to make better food choices for life, I need to learn more about these very things as well.  Empowering our children with good information about basic nutrition is one of a number of precious gifts that we can share with them but as an adult I am also aware of a need to empower myself with that same information.

As a woman who has struggled with healthy eating for a very long time, Food Revolution Day is a true gift.  I need you to know that you don’t need to be someone who struggles with healthy eating to access this gift too.  The gift is being an active participant in Food Revolution Day in a way that has meaning for you.  The gift is expanding your knowledge, teaching and learning alongside each child.  The gift is being in community with others who value this too.

Maple Ridge is celebrating Food Revolution Day this year with two events.  The first is the very popular Farm to Fork Dinner at Big Feast Bistro + Catering on May 16th.  Please call Big Feast at 604.477.4334 to make your reservation.  Big Feast is generously donating $2 from each Farm to Fork item ordered and these proceeds will be shared between the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation and the Interactive Hot Lunch Program at the Environmental School Project in School District 42.

The chances to participate don’t end there.  On Saturday, May 17th Vicki McLeod and the Kitchenettes along with Chef Mike from Big Feast Bistro are sponsoring the Food Revolution Day Children’s Contest.  We are asking children 5-12 years of age to submit their favourite recipe for a chance to join Chef Mike in a live cooking demo at the Haney Farmers Market.  Recipes must be received at the Kitchenette Tent by 10:45am on May 17th to be eligible.  Our Junior chefs will be chosen by random draw and must be at the market for the draw at 11am on May 17th to win as the live cooking demo starts immediately after the draw.  If your child can’t be at the market on May 17th please know that we will be posting some of our favourite recipes on the Dishing in the Kitchen website so we’d still love them to participate.
